Antibiotic resistant bacteria or diseases is a big problem. It depends on how you look at it, but I feel we should all be worried. In one way you could argue the fact that if bacteria builds a resistance it will change or mutate much like diseases do to evolve to survive and therefore we as humans will have to evolve along with it. In order to address this phenomena we have to understand the root cause.

In today’s society people do not think far enough down the line, rather they do what seems relevant or beneficial to the moment. This is why we find ourselves feeding livestock with antibiotics to keep them healthy, but in turn we eat these animal products and ingest these antibiotics ourselves which allows bacteria to become resistant and therefore, when we get an infection the antibiotics are no longer reputable and we have to either use more or a completely new one. This is counterproductive. We should be looking for a greater return on investment, without having to have so much research and development only to start all over again.

Much like bacterial infections and antibiotics, we vaccinate our youth and are annually vaccinated to prevent virus and disease only to find that these viruses also become resistant to the vaccine, or mutate themselves. It seems that this is a never ending process, and who knows maybe it is the earth’s way of controlling the population or in fact keeping a super virus from forming and manifesting itself. Needless to say it doesn’t seem feasible to continue the endless cycle, at least from a human standpoint.

Per the CDC (Center for Disease Control) at least 2 million people each year become ill with some sort of infection from bacteria. Bacteria can be transmitted by a simple touch of a door knob or a sneeze in a crowded bus. The antibiotics used to treat these illness have over the years not been as effective against illness. Scientist believe that the bacteria that causes the infections is becoming immune to the antibiotic fight off them off. Due to the availability of travel, disease like people can travel quickly. The information that antibiotics is less effective than in the past is not positive feedback. Scientist are now researching alternative options to help kill bacteria and cure the individual before death occurs. In researching this topic, I don’t believe we need to alarmed. I do believe that we can all take steps to live a healthier life by trying not to be in public places when we are ill. I also believe that with the help of technology and research, an alternative way to control the bacteria will be developed.
