This region has intense and entrenched conflicts that have really shaped not only our perception of the region but our own politics in the US. We did not go in depth on several conflicts (such as the civil war in Syria, the equally brutal war in Yemen, ISIS, American involvement in the region, the Iranian Revolution, the so-called Arab Spring etc.). Instead, the Crash Course video gave one overview of some of the history of outside involvement (and betrayal) in the region.
Consider the role of borders in the region. They are new and they are supposed to be static (in the modern state system) in places where people have moved. Many borders are contested. Some are militarized. Consider the role of borders and identity. Why do borders matter? Who gets to draw them? Who gets to enforce them? What is the role of various actors in drawing borders of Southwest Asia, in particular, that has led some of the most entrenched conflicts today? remember, be respectful and consider all the narratives.
