PYSCH 5A

The DSM identifies many specific psychological disorders. While research has found that in general, no one type of therapy is substantially better than others, different treatments may be more appropriate for specific disorders. In this project, you are asked to choose a psychological disorder that is of interest to you. You will describe the disorder in detail, indicate what is known about its causes and progression, and identify a treatment or treatments that would be most appropriate.

As you complete this project, think about the following: What do we know about psychological disorders and their treatment? What does research tell us about the most effective treatment for disorders?

At the end of this activity, you will: Submit your course project dealing with psychological disorders and their treatment.

At the end of this module you will be required to submit a course project on psychological disorders and their treatment. You will be asked to choose one of the following: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Major Depressive Disorder Bipolar Disorder Schizophrenia

After choosing the one disorder on which to focus, make sure to: Describe key features of the disorder, including its symptoms Address the biopsychosocial explanations that could account for the development of that disorder

After choosing a disorder, read the associated module in the textbook and choose an appropriate therapy or therapies for that disorder from the following choices: Psychoanalysis Humanistic Therapy Behavioral Therapy (you may choose combined Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy) Cognitive Therapy (you may choose combined Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy) Drug Therapies

When applying your chosen therapy or therapies (i.e. an eclectic approach), make sure to: Discuss and explain the specific methods of that therapy that would be utilized in the treatment of your chosen disorder. Provide a rationale for the effectiveness of your type of treatment (i.e. present evidence that supports the effectiveness of that therapy for your chosen disorder.

From the information presented in the Psychology webtext and from your research in the library or onthe Web (i.e. make sure to incorporate what psychological research and studies have shown that would support your points raised in the paper), present your position and support it with credible sources of information using APA style citations and references. You are required to use at least three (3) references, to include the course webtext; the other references should come from psychological journal articles or from relevant psychologyspecific websites. Before submitting your paper, use the CourseProject page in chapter 5 of the webtext to check your paper against the rubric.

You are expected to present a minimum 750 word response. The paper should be submitted in a WORD document in 12 point; Times New Roman font. Given this guideline, your paper should be 3 – 4 pages in length; excluding the title page, abstract, and reference page. Refer to the APA Style guidelines document for information on the title page, abstract, and reference page. Submission Instructions

Online Psychology Lab – Reaction Time Discussion Topic and Research Project Topic/Hypothesis Discussion Topic

 Research Project Topic/HypothesisDiscussion TopicI’m Done Overdue – March 18 at 11:59 PM Starts Mar 12, 2018 12:00 AM

You have a choice in how you approach this Research Report. First read the project instructions, then complete this discussion.

Your hypothesis and topic determines what you choose to analyze. You could be interested in reaction time and age so you analyze the three tasks’ results by age.

You may be interested in gender differences or even gender by age differences.

You may be interested in something else, like if the participant was an athlete or not. You can create a new variable in the Research Report data and put a 1 if the participant was an athlete and a 0 if not. Then you can analyze the data by that grouping (see video).

You could make up a new variable for how many drinks the participant had prior to doing the lab. You could see if there was a correlation between the number of drinks and the time they spent on the lab.

Your choice! Compose your response to this discussion with your name as the subject. Describe your research idea and topic and what your hypothesis is. Also tell me how you plan (or think you might plan) to analyze the data. It’s OK if you are not sure about this – we will discuss it and I will give you some guidance if necessary.

For example: my research idea is about whether age correlates to reaction time. I am only going to use task 1. My hypothesis is that as people get older, their reaction time increases, they get slower. I will set up the data in two columns and run a Pearson correlation of time by age using SPSS. This is a very simple example – I expect your idea to be a little more interesting!

Note. There were three tasks in the lab: 1) simple reaction time task, 2) a go/no go reaction task, and 3) a choice reaction time task. You only need to pick one, but can use more than one.

Also, please use at least 50 subjects in each group.

Final Project: Introduction, Literature Review, and Methods Section

Assignment 2: Final Project: Introduction, Literature Review, and Methods Section

Turn in the proposed methods section for your research paper as well as your introduction and literature review.

The introduction and literature review should address your research question: why it is important, and how prior research does or does not support your hypothesis, as well as providing a background on what we know about this topic.

Please refer to the material on the components of a research paper provided inModule 1 as you work on this document.

Your methods section, in addition to covering the subheadings of participants, instruments, and procedure, must include a fourth subheading called ethical issues and note any ethical issues that need to be considered, as well as how they would be handled.

Be sure to include a title/cover page and a reference page formatted in APA style.

Submit your response to the M4: Assignment 2 Dropbox by Wednesday, March 18, 2015. Your response should be at least four pages, double spaced, long. All written assignments and responses should follow APA rules for attributing sources. Confirm the latest edition number with your instructor.

   Discussion:
Assessment of Depression

Although there has recently been a deluge of media highlighting various prescription drugs for treatment of depression and anxiety, there remains a lack of understanding about mental health, in general. Further, stigma often is attached to seeking professional help for mental health issues.

Depression is a disorder that people often do not realize they are experiencing. The symptoms of depression can vary from person to person (i.e., weight gain vs. weight loss, loss of sleep vs. increased sleep), which can also make it difficult to diagnose. Many people experience times of sadness, including waking up feeling down for no apparent reason. These feelings are not unusual and come with the ups and downs of life.

As a professional, understanding the criteria for depression and comorbid diseases is part of a comprehensive assessment. Depression and anxiety can precede other mental health and physical issues and can also be a result of those issues. Clarifying the progression of the presenting problem will enable you to establish a well-informed treatment plan and intervention.

For this Discussion, review the course-specific case study for Miranda in this week’s resources. As you review and analyze this case, remind yourself of the need for a comprehensive assessment that does not focus on the perceived deficits. You will read and then consider the responses of the professionals involved in the case. While reviewing their varied responses, consider their possible biases and how they have chosen to focus on the presenting problem and the client’s situation.

· Post the depression scale you located, summarize how it is used, and describe the target population.

· Describe how you might apply this assessment to the course-specific case study of Miranda and include any additional questions you would ask Miranda to assess her level of depression.

· Then, identify the red flags that might cause concern and/or indicate significant depression.

· Finally, identify a scale that can be used to assess risk for suicide.

In order to create your slideshow, review the two case studies and then answer the questions following each case study:

Case Study 1: Isaac is a fifty-nine-year-old man. Several months ago, he noticed a slight tremor in his hands. He assumed this to be a normal consequence of aging. The tremor, however, gradually worsened, along with some muscular stiffness and slowness in initiating movement. The tremor was more pronounced when he was not voluntarily moving. Isaac was referred to a neurologist, who diagnosed him with Parkinson’s disease. After visiting the neurologist, Isaac and his family ask you to further explain this disorder. Isaac also asks about L-dopa as a treatment—the neurologist had mentioned L-dopa as an effective medication but had instead prescribed selegiline:
•What are the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease?
•What are the possible causes? Be sure to discuss both hereditary and environmental factors thought to contribute to this disease.
•What parts of the brain does this disease affect?
•Why do you think the neurologist prescribed selegiline instead of L-dopa?

Case Study 2: Sabrina is a twenty-seven-year-old woman who recently underwent a corpus callosotomy. Initially after surgery, when given a verbal command, Sabrina demonstrated marked apraxia of the left hand. However, the extent of this issue diminished over time. Answer the following questions about this client:
•What disorder was most likely being treated by this operation, and how is the surgery performed?
•In what way is the surgery expected to help Sabrina?
•What are the risks and benefits of the surgery? Compare these to the risks and benefits of an alternative treatment. If the decision were yours, which would you recommend? Explain your decision.
•What was the cause of the apraxia?
•What does the reduction in apraxia symptoms tell us about hemispheric specialization?

ASSIGNMENT 1: Community Resources for Older Individuals

Volunteers and political officials in local communities often campaign to improve conditions and provide services to increase the well-being of individuals and families living in those communities. If you are the parent of young children, you might focus on improving the local school or creating safe places where children can play. If you are an individual in later adulthood or a caregiver for an individual in later adulthood, what community resources might be important to you? For this week’s Assignment, you evaluate the resources that your local community provides for its older members.

To prepare for this Assignment, research the resources available in your local community to support the issues and concerns of the older population. Note any gaps in these services and consider what improvements might be made to existing services as well as what services should be added.

Submit a 2- to 4-page paper that includes the following:

o   A description of the services in your local community that support individuals in later adulthood

o   An evaluation of the effectiveness of the services you identified

o   A description of service gaps you identified

o   An explanation of how to improve existing services

o   A description of services that should be added, and why

Support your Assignment with specific references to the resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.

evidence

This week is divided into two sections. First, you will focus on defining, refining, and critiquing the concept of evidence-based programs and their connection to theory.  Having read and reviewed these resources, prepare a reflection paper on evidence-based programs and practices. Be sure your paper addresses the following: Include a definition of evidence-based programs.  Determine how these programs draw from theory. Identify appropriate questions and their elements used in choosing an evidence-based program. Include an explanation of an evidence continuum that you consider valid when reviewing your topic in health psychology.

Part 1: Define and Refine

Do a practice run using the resources this week and focus on three major elements: Identify the evidence-based theories being discussed.  Define them. Indicate which questions the researchers proposed that drew them to the theories. Discuss how the topic is reinterpreted from these theories.

Part 2: Critique Evidence-Based Programs

Finally, pick a research paper that you have previously reviewed, and then review the same three elements discussed above: Identify the evidence-based theories being discussed.  Define them. Indicate which questions the researchers proposed that drew them to the theories. Discuss how the topic is reinterpreted from these theories.

Part 1 Length: 3 pages, not including title and reference pages

Part 2 Length: 3 pages, not including title and reference pages

Total Length of Part 1 and Part 2: 6 pages, not including title and reference pages

References: Include three to five scholarly previous resources.

Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to University’s Academic Integrity Policy.
