1.

  • One thing you have learned about your health during this course.

I learned in this course that with different pollutions can have severe consequences on my health meaning that pollutions from cars, factories and even from kitchens can effect my breathing and my body’s response to the harmful pollutes in the air.

  • How your body might be at risk from a disruption in homeostasis.

My body might be at risk for disruption in homeostasis because with me waking up in the middle of the night and not getting the full recommended amount of sleep I that require, means that I will have a higher risk of having a cold.

  • One change you would like to make based on what you have learned in this course.

I think that I would change how my weight and amount of fitness I do based on the information i learned in this course since I believe that with my age and family life, my focus on my fitness and weight has been in a decrease. With my children being older than before, I can focus more on walking with my dog making my walks and amount of steps I do every day increase to a stutainable limit that o feel comfortable with.

2.

This course has taught me so many things about my body. I have learned new things, I have learned what I could do better, and I learned what things I’m actually on great track for. This course has even taught some of my family members better things, and better routine. I especially loved the labs. I think the labs took the on line experience to a whole new level where we could actually learn and diagnoses, and see exactly in depth what diseases or problems we are learning about.

During this course I have learned I could do a lot better on my eating habits. During the week where we started logging into My Fitness Pal, I realized exactly what I was putting into my body that did not seem as well as I thought. I realized some days I was eating so many carbohydrates, and trans fats, and some weeks I realized I wasn’t eating enough calories for my weight. I also learned that my physical activity is lacking and that I could do way better in that department. As this course ends, I plan on still using the app to continue success.

I feel my body at this moment is not at any particular risk for homeostasis, but an individual, for example that is sick could be at risk. Homeostasis is generally termed into keeping balance within the human body. Homeostasis is a self regulating biological process to keep stability. Someone sick with a fever would be a great example. Someone with a fever, their temperature can be 103.5, a normal temperature is between 97-99, and that therefore disrupts homeostasis. Your body would have to work extra hard to start regulating the rest of the body by blood sugars, brain activity, breathing, heart rate, etc.

One change I would like to make , and learning from all of this would be to generally eat better. Learning about MyPlate, and seeing exactly what I was putting into my body really put it into perspective that something that “looks” healthy generally is not. It is better to consider the fats, carbohydrates, protein, and vitamins in a food item, or any item being ingested. With my using MyPlate and My Fitness Pal, I believe I could make a great change to my body.

  • Describe how college-level education and FEMA certification elements prepare emergency managers for employment.

College Level educational requires help to prepare future emergency managers for careers by making sure that a specific set of requirements are met. Those specific requirements can ensure that students have been exposed to the basic knowledge requirements of the job. It gives them a chance to learn more in depth of what the career is and all the other areas that go into making up emergency management. Plus it also creates an equal learning opportunity for all students who study this specific career. It’s a way of allowing a high level of education institution to measure what is taught and how well a student did during the courses. This college level education and FEMA certifications are a group of guidelines that need to be met to make sure that students have been exposed to most everything related to emergency management.

  • Describe how emergency managers apply college-level education and FEMA
  • certification elements once on the job.

Students who enter into emergency management can use their college level education into practice by using what they were taught in real world situations. Their previous education can give them an idea of what to expect and as they learn on the job that knowledge will be enhanced by their every day experiences.

  • List other qualifications emergency managers should possess.

Qualifications for an emergency manager are, time management, attention to detail, strong leadership skills, strong critical thinking skills, the ability to grasp important information quickly, the ability to take care and make decisions quickly. Also, the ability to listen, ask thought provoking questions, and being able to remain calm under pressure.

  • Project what you see as the single most important changing element for emergency managers.

I believe the most important skill is to remain calm under very stressful situations. If a leader isn’t able to remain calm then the situation is already out of control. Teams look to their leader for guidance and how to act appropriately, so a leader needs to show that even in a stressful situation, a calm demeanor can be obtained.

  • Determine the adjustment in skills this predicted change will require for emergency managers in the next 10 years.

I can definitely see a strong technology background as a skill requirement for managers in the next decade. As technology advances a leader will need to know how to utilize these advances and be able to work the required equipment.

Describe how college-level education and FEMA certification elements prepare emergency managers for employment. Describe how emergency managers apply college-level education and FEMA certification elements once on the job.

College-level education prepares emergency managers for employment by educating and training them on emergency preparedness and response, disaster and society, terrorism and homeland security, relationship management , emergency management and public policy, basic emergency planning and disaster health management. College-level education will provide an emphasis on the basic principles of the Incident Command System and the National Incident Management System and how to form a contingent action plan pre and post disaster for response efforts to remain progressive throughout the recovery process. College-level education will also provide emphasis on communication and management skills, planning and phase stages, organization of the ICS system, activation and coordination of joint operations, response, relief, recovery, how to mitigate disasters by activating resources…both internal and external, hazardous materials and others phases of emergency management which applied either directly or indirectly to emergency management. FEMA certification elements prepare emergency management for employment by certifying them and preparing them to perform in areas such as Radiological Emergency Management, An Introduction to Hazardous Materials and Special Events Contingency Planning for Public Safety Agencies. The FEMA certifications serve as a focal point for delivering and balancing comprehensive training skills and knowledge to the emergency managers by guiding them toward understanding not only the basic principles of emergency management, but key roles, skills and abilities needed to perform the set of skills to deliver an effective response effort. By emergency managers studying college-level education courses and FEMA certifications, they will be able to perform their jobs to successfully fulfill their duties and responsibilities during and after disasters events. The managers will be able to provide pre and post action plans and reports to fully mitigate any future damage.

List other qualifications emergency managers should possess.

Other qualifications emergency managers should possess are, but not limited to, communication skills (uhf, vhf, ham), critical-thinking skills (analyzing and interpreting), decision making skills, interpersonal skills, and leadership skills. Emergency managers need to also possess the qualifications of accessing, coordinating, controlling, mitigating, planning, preparing, analyzing, reviewing, applying and maintaining their duties as it pertains to emergency management operations.

Project what you see as the single most important changing element for emergency managers.

What I see as the single most important changing element for emergency managers is the element of “surprise”. The element of surprise is the most changing element because it’s the most unexpected attack or danger that may occur in a single moment in a place. The element of surprised requires emergency management to be vigilant to respond to a disaster at minutes notice. The emergency managers must remain punctual in their decision, and swiftly respond in a timely manner to mitigate any potential risk, damage that may have occurred and to prevent future risk and damage to the people and its community. The due diligence of the emergency manager is to understand the surprise factor and eliminate any threat that may agitate it further.

Determine the adjustment in skills this predicted change will require for emergency managers in the next 10 years.

The adjustment in skills that emergency managers will need to adhere and adapt to in the next 10 years are the ability to pre and post plan emergency response efforts for both natural and man-made disasters, to include un-common occurrences such as nuclear or biological warfare, threat of attack on astronomical levels and the explosion of volcanoes which may spread plum hundreds if not thousands of miles across the continental United States. The skills will also include properly executing response efforts, repairing damages, establishing dedicated communication lines and any additional survival and response skills and techniques that may apply to surprise attacks which may cause catastrophic damage.

Identify the closest emergency manager to you.

The closest emergency (operations) manager to me is Gustavo Vilchez, City of Port Saint Lucie – Division of Emergency Management.

Research his or her educational level and certifications

Education: University of Miami – Bachelor of Music, Music Therapy – Florida Atlantic University – Master of Business Administration, Crisis and Emergency Management

Certifications: FEMA – Master Professional Continuity Practitioner

Compare that information to what you believe the qualifications should be based on the nature of the responsibilities associates with the position.

In my opinion, there is no comparison to what I believe the qualifications should be and what qualifications Gustavo Vilchez has. I believe that the qualifications should be, but not limited to, HAM radio certification, degree in crisis and disaster management and / or emergency management, AED / CPR / First Aid and Certified Emergency Manager. There may be some qualifications that are not listed but would be highly recommended if not required. If the applicant is currently in training and is able to obtain the certification within a certain time frame from hiring then that may be acceptable for operational purposes.
