Social Justice

As social workers, examining issues of diversity requires that we also think critically about issues of oppression, marginalization, and social justice. This assignment is an opportunity to explore a current social justice issue that affects the communities in which you will work as a social worker, and to explore ways that you can contribute to advocacy efforts as a social worker.

 

Utilizing a free podcast/ film app that can be utilized on a smartphone or computer the students will research the topic discussed in the episode and engage in reflection about the topic.

 

The written assignment will contain the following:

Select and discuss the social justice issue that is currently relevant and of interest to you (Gun Violence)

 

Research the history of the issue, including the following information about the identified group: History of treatment of identified group as it relates to health, legal/justice system, politics, economics, education, and oppression.

 

 If applicable, attempt to establish a timeline of the issue that includes colonization and slavery. Commonly held beliefs and stereotypes about the identified group. Research and discuss current social action campaigns and/or groups advocating on behalf of the identified group, and how they developed (at least two in addition to the professional and/or group from the podcast); Discuss the role that social workers play/can play in advocating on behalf of the identified group; Be specific (position, tasks, micro or macro) Find an educational and/or advocacy event that is happening (National or International) that would help support the identified group, including: The purpose, objectives, agenda, and intended impact of the event, Target audience, Location of the event, How your group would advertise the event Reflect on how the knowledge you acquired throughout the process will impact your social work practice Present a synopsis of all sections above to the class in a 5-minute presentation Podcast must be made available to the class. Free applications that may be used include Anchor and iMovie. Be creative and have fun! Feel free to include music, poetry, photography or even an interview. You can also create a Power Point with voice over. Your peers will have access to your projects as they will all be uploaded on our course on CANVAS. Let’s explore this in class! Students will be expected to submit all references utilized in APA format to the instructor on the day of the presentation.

Personal philosophy

This week, you will develop your personal philosophy of teaching in a written statement, articulating your beliefs about important educational theories and practices. Your teaching philosophy should be based on what is meaningful to you in your approach to teaching.
