The Leader as Communicator

Can you imagine an effective leader who is not an effective communicator? Leadership communication skills are very important. Some would call effective communication the most important leadership competency. Without the skills of effective communication, you will not be an effective leader, especially in this complex, fast-paced environment.  It is important for the leader to create an environment of open communication where ideas, solutions, and problems can all be discussed without fear. When employees understand that communication is open and encouraged, they will perform better.  Using the assigned readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research communication competencies required for leaders.  Then, respond to the following: •What are some key communication competencies needed in leaders today? •Is individual communication more important than group or mass communication? Why or why not? •List 2–4 strategies that leaders can use to improve their individual communication skills. Which method is most important? Why?

Effective Learning Assignment

Paper to Review: Mullet, H. G., & Marsh, E. J. (2016). Correcting false memories: Errors must be noticed and replaced. Memory & Cognition, 44, 403–412.

The “effective-learning” assignment will test your ability to think, generate hypotheses, and, in general, apply psychological science. The task will be to read a paper referenced in the “A guide to Effective Studying and Learning” by Matthew G. Rhodes, Anne M. Cleary, & Edward L. DeLosh.  Then you will write a brief (about 400 words) summary of the paper. In this summary, outline what the hypotheses were, what the methodology was, what the results were, and what are the implications of these results.   You will then write an additional analysis (about 200 words) about how one could take the results of that study and use it to improve the efficiency of their own learning.  In this second section, consider what the data show and how learners can apply those results to make themselves better learners.  Think about this last section as a “letter to grandma” in which you explain how a particular memory/learning technique can be incorporated into your own learning.   This section should be in simple language that anyone can understand.  Requirements The paper you review must be from the Reference section of Rhodes et al (2019).  If your chosen paper is not from Rhodes et al (2019), your project will not be read or graded. Do not use any quotes from the paper. Quoting will result in a lower grade. Do not paraphrase – use your own writing. Any plagiarism will result in a project not being read or graded. If you do not know what the word “plagiarism” means, read below and make sure you understand. A full reference to the paper used must be included. The project must be between 500 and 700 words. Projects shorter and longer will not be read or graded.  You must craft your arguments to fit into the word limit. The word limit refers to the body of your project and does not include a title page (not required), references, and any supplementary material you add (not required). APA style is encouraged but not required. You may email me questions on how best to do this project Grading will follow the Effective-Learning Assignment Grading Rubric

Assignment: Evolutionary Theory and Crime

Darwin’s theory of evolution explains the development of biological characteristics in various species of plants and animals as essential to their survival over time. This theory is also relevant to human social behavior, and, by extension, criminal behavior—and is argued by evolutionary psychologists who propose that it provides explanations for a range of antisocial behaviors, including rape and murder. They note that in some social environments, these aggressive behaviors may be viewed as being advantageous to survival and are indicative of survival of the fittest or natural selection theories. Some criminologists, however, deem this idea to be invalid, and they and other critics of applying evolutionary theory to criminal behavior assert that evolution does not adequately explain aggressive crimes. Instead, they suggest relying on a combination of factors to explain aggressive criminal behavior.

For this Assignment, select two crimes with which you are familiar to which evolutionary theory may be applied. For each of the crimes, reflect on how the aspects of the criminal behavior and the characteristics of the criminal(s) might be explained by evolutionary theory.

Reflect on whether or not you think evolutionary theory accounts for criminal behavior, and consider your reasons why.

Assignment (1-2 pages): Briefly describe the crimes you selected. Explain how evolutionary theory does and does not account for each crime, using specific examples. Explain whether or not you think evolutionary theory accounts for criminal behavior and why, using specific examples.

Support your Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are asked to provide a reference list only for those resources not included in the resources for this course.
