discuss the potential effects of potential conflicts with local industry on health promotion

Case study
A multitude of different social, economic and cultural factors determine a person’s health. This means that people living in the same community, or people of the same age, can have vastly different chances of good health.
Instinctively you might think that access to health services is the biggest factor in determining health. However, many other things significantly affect our likelihood of good health. It can also be easy to blame individuals for their poor health, or congratulate others for good health, yet in reality many of the determinants of health are out of our own personal control. Underlying these broad factors is a much deeper level of structural causes, which are more difficult to change.
John is 30 years old and has a history of asthma, diabetes, is a smoker and has been overweight for most of his adult life. He lives with his wife and 3 children on a council estate housing which is overcrowded. Often he is unable to pay for the electrical bill and provide food for his family. His wife and children are overweight and they suffer from asthma. John is due to go back to his country as his visa to remain in this country will expire soon. He recently went to the GP after not visiting the GP for 2 years about a minor complaint, and as a matter of course his blood pressure was taken. Much to his surprise, it was above what was considered acceptable. His doctor started him on medication because his high blood pressure was high enough to warrant immediate action.
His blood pressure dropped, but unfortunately he still did not change his lifestyle and did not take his medication as scheduled. John is unemployed for the past 2 years and receives unemployment benefits so he does not have very much disposable income. John subsequently became depressed and lacks energy. He returned to his GP, who sent him to a Health and Wellbeing Clinic to check his blood pressure and to seek advice from health professionals who would give him advice on how to better control his blood pressure, diabetes and overweight. At the clinic he was given advice on how to change his lifestyle, which included reducing salt in his diet. However, due to cultural factors, socioeconomic factors, he struggled to eat proper meals and he did not follow any of the advice given and his blood pressure and diabetes remained a cause for concern.

Task 3: LO3 Understand factors which influence health promotion.
(Up to 1000 recommended words)
The Institute of Health Promotion and Education brings together people with a professional interest in Health Education and Health Promotion. It offers an opportunity for members to share their experience, ideas and information. The Institute responds to public consultations on behalf of members and external health promotion/education communities. In doing so, the Institute offers a voice for all those involved in health promotion and education. In the case study John is a smoker and although he has considerable health problems, he continues to smoke. Using the case study you are to write a report that will form the basis of a wider report about understanding factors which influence health promotion. You should address the following points below.
What you must do

3.1 explain how health beliefs relate to theories of health behaviour [P3.1, D3]

health beliefs : Cultural, Spiritual ,Physiological

Theories :Reason and Action ,Protection and Motivation , Stages of change model

Examples Health behaviour Theories : Why do people smoke/ drink?

use Prochaska and DiClemente Stages of Change model to support how health beliefs relate to theories of health behaviour.

3.2 discuss the potential effects of potential conflicts with local industry on health promotion. [P3.2, D1]

PLEASE TALK ABOUT TOBACCO

1. HOW DOES THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY LOBBY GOVERNMENT?

2. WHAT IS THE HEALTH CONSEQUENCE OF TOBACCO COMPANY TRYING TO INFLUENCE THE GOVERMENT ? THEN LINK TO THE CASE STUDY

Evidence –Based Public Health

Once we have assessed the health of a population, and taken a closer look at the impact of social determinants of health on health equity and disparities, we want to achieve better results! But what works to do better? Which public health interventions have evidence that demonstrates their success?
By now, you have participated and/or watched the faculty presentation on Community Health Improvement Planning, and completed the Study Guide on Community Health Improvement Partnerships. You shared information about your county’s efforts to address the identified primary health concern and hopefully generated conversations that may lead to collaborations for your upcoming Community & Public Health Practicum course health promotion projects.
This week, focus on locating and describing evidence-based approaches to achieve health improvements for your selected primary health concern (from your County Health Assessment). The CDC Community Health Improvement Navigator website has an excellent interactive resource for finding evidence-based solutions.
The Community Health Improvement Plan (Links to an external site.)paper is due this week–it is worth 25% of your course grade!

INSTRUCTIONS: A major paper of not more than (and not much less than) 15 pages (excluding reference list and appendices), double-spaced and typed in Times New Roman 12-point font with 1” inch margins, is required. You will choose a topic that will explore the future of an entity (focus can include governmental and/or nonprofit organizations), such as Florida and its people. A local entity such as a county, municipality, or province and its people may also be chosen. (**Please note: students will choose an entity to study other than the State of Florida; however, students can choose to study a local county or city located within Florida**) In exploring the future of the entity that you choose, possible subtopics include, but are not limited to… Environment Economy Education Security and Defense Intelligence Terrorism Crime Health Telemedicine The family unit and society Technology Migration/Immigration You are required to SUBMIT A 1-PAGE ABSTRACT OF YOUR TOPIC (through the turnitin link on the BlackBoard course) by Wednesday, June 1, 2016. In your abstract, you will: Introduce your paper topic; Discuss why your topic is important; and Include a preliminary list of the major trends and conditions that are likely to be of significant importance to the entity you will study.

You are the President of the United States and your first term ends in a year. The cost-control mechanism you instituted two years ago, based on patient cost sharing and managed competition, has not worked, and the American people are upset about persistent health care inflation. You are preparing a major television address on health care costs. What will you propose? Can you convince the public that yours is a painless cost control strategy? Be sure to site references used in developing your address to the nation.

Discuss how an advanced practice role can impact the RNs career advancement

Assignment 1: Role of the Advanced Nurse Paper (24 points)

This assignment relates to the role of the master’s prepared nurse. Students will develop a scholarly paper utilizing the American Psychological Association (APA) 6th edition format. In review, when developing a scholarly APA paper, begin with an introductory paragraph that includes the purpose statement. The body of the paper should include levels of heading that keep the writer focused and on track. For example, this paper would have three level one headings not including the introductory paragraph or conclusion. The paper would then have a conclusion to summarize the main points of the paper. The last page would be the reference page.

Instructional Rubric:

Discuss the chosen specialty and reasons for pursuing an advanced nursing role.

Describe the role of the chosen specialty and the requirements for the master’s prepared nurse.

Discuss how an advanced practice role can impact the RNs career advancement. Utilize the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report: The Future of Nursing Leading Change, Advancing Health (found in Modules/Week 3) in the discuss

The scholarly paper should be in narrative format, 3 to 4 pages excluding the title and reference page.

Include an introductory paragraph, purpose statement, and a conclusion.

Include level 1 headings to organize the paper.

Write the paper in third person, not first person (meaning do not use ‘we’ or ‘I’) and in a scholarly manner. To clarify: I, we, you, me, our may not be used. In addition, describing yourself as the researcher or the author should not be used.

Include a minimum of three (3) professional peer-reviewed scholarly journal references to support the paper (review in Ulrich Periodical Directory) and be less than five (5) years old.

APA format is required (attention to spelling/grammar, a title page, a reference page, and in-text citations).

Submit the assignment to Turnitin prior to the final submission, review the originality report, and make any needed changes.

explain the relationship between diabetes and obesity

Please use the data, StatCrunch, (or Excel), and your knowledge of statistics to answer the questions below. *Download the provided CDC data into StatCrunch or Excel (located under this assignment on the class site).
Part I
1a. Calculate the correlation coefficient (the r value) between each of the independent (and quantitative) variables, and the variable called diabetes.
Fill in this TABLE that gives the r value (correlation) between each variable in the dataset and diabetes:
r values TABLEObesity Rates
Physical Activity
Poverty Rate
Smoking

DIABETESr value here r value here r value here r value here

1b. What does this value tell us about the relationship between each of the independent variables and diabetes?
Hint: In other words, looks at each r value you have calculated. Each r-value will be either positive or negative (or 0). Each r-value will be strong, medium, or weak. Describe each of the r values in terms of the relationship that each represents.
FILL IN THIS TABLE TO ANSWER #2:
r values TABLEObesity RatesPhysical ActivityPoverty RateSmoking
DIABETESdescribe r value (positive or negative?) (strong, medium, weak)? What does it tell about the relationship? describe r value (positive or negative?) (strong, medium, weak)? What does it tell about the relationship?describe r value (positive or negative?) (strong, medium, weak)? What does it tell about the relationship?describe r value (positive or negative?) (strong, medium, weak)? What does it tell about the relationship?

2a. Run a regression using diabetes as the dependent variable (y), and smoking as the independent variable (x).
HINT: Therefore, the variable called Diabetes is going to be your dependent or y variable and the variable called smoking will be the independent or x variable. If you create a scatterplot (with the x variable on the horizontal axis and the y variable on the vertical access, you can see the relationship).
PASTE THE SCATTERPLOT WITH THE TRENDLINE and EQUATION HERE

Make sure you have the regression equation included.

3a. Is there a statistically significant relationship between poverty rates and diabetes? Explain.
HINTS: This question is not related to the question above it. In the question above it, you are asked to run regression for Diabetes and Smoking.
For this question, you are looking at Poverty and Diabetes. You are asked to determine if the relationship between Poverty and Diabetes is significant.
Here are two great YouTube Videos for Regression and the p values for the correlation in Excel. Even if you use StatCrunch, the concepts are the same 🙂
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWhsH1vcIaw

Write out the regression equation calculated using the data. You can use Excel to get this.

Interpret the slope coefficient the value in front of the x.

HINTS: You can do this in Excel (or StatCrunch). As a note, I always use Excel because it is more common, better for a resume, and publically available (StatCrunch is not publically available).
