The Impact Of Social Policy

Social policies can have a significant impact on individuals and families, as well as the organizations and agencies that implement the policies. In some cases, the policy, as written, appears comprehensive and effective. Yet, despite appearances, the policy might fail to be effective as a result of improper implementation, interpretation, and/or application of the policy. As a social worker, how might you reduce the potential negative impact faulty social policies might have on organizations and agencies, as well as the populations you serve?

For this Discussion, review this week’s resources, including cases “Working with Immigrants and Refugees: The Case of Luisa” and “Social Work Policy: Benefit Administration and Provision.” Then, select either of the cases and consider how the social welfare policies presented in the case influenced the problems facing Luisa or Tessa. Finally, think about how policies affect social agencies and how social workers work with clients such as Tessa or Luisa.

By Day 3

Post an explanation of the effects of the social welfare policies presented in the case study you selected on Luisa or Tessa. Be specific and reference the case study you selected in your post. Finally, explain how policies affect social agencies and how social workers work with clients, such as Tessa or Luisa.

Analyzing Social Problems And Social Policy

You might think that social problems only affect those who suffer from the problem directly, but they actually have much broader impact. For example, the public education system shapes the educational experiences of those who are not a part of the private school system. The government provides policies and procedures necessary to develop the public education system and make recommendations on ways to engage youth. If the system does not adhere to these policies or engage the youth effectively, we may be faced with a population of adults that have not received an adequate education. Social problems, if unchecked, may affect a large number of people in the society. As a social worker, you should be keen in discerning social problems and addressing them.

For this Assignment, you will identify a problem that affects populations that social workers serve. Some examples of social problems include poverty, child welfare/abuse, and homelessness.

By Day 7

Assignment (2-4 double-spaced pages in APA format): In addition to a minimum of six scholarly references, which may include electronic government documents and reputable websites, your paper should include:

1. A description of the social problem you selected and any known causes or explanations for the problem

2. A description of the problem’s prevalence in society

3.A description of the specific population impacted by this social problem, if any. If the social problem you selected does affect a specific population, include an explanation of why that might be the case.

4. An explanation of the theories that support the problem and approaches scholars and policy analysts use to address the problem

Psychosocial Theory And Diverse Groups

There will be times when a social worker is presented with a case where they are not familiar with the surrounding psychosocial issues. Because social workers are on a continual journey in learning, it is important to read pertinent literature. This Discussion provides an opportunity to visit Walden Library and strengthen your skills in identifying and locating an empirical research article.

To prepare:

Select one of these three groups: (1)( an individual who is physically disabled.)

Review the Walden Library resources listed in the Learning Resources.

Then conduct a library search for an empirical study focused on one of the groups above and the unique psychosocial factors or issues a social worker should be aware of when working with that group.

Post the APA-style reference for the article you found in the library.

Describe four specific psychosocial factors that should be taken into account in order to understand the psychosocial context when working with the group you selected. (Two of these factors should be psychologically related and two of these factors should be socially related).

Identify and explain a psychosocial intervention that addresses one of the four specific psychosocial factors you described above.

Identify 1 to 2 outcomes you might measure if you were to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention.

Evaluate one advantage of using a psychosocial framework in social work practice with the group you chose.

Interview A Senior Citizen

Identify a senior citizen and schedule an hour to talk with him or her face to face. Be sure to tell the person that you are completing the interview as part of a class assignment and that the content of the interview is completely confidential (no names will be used). Conduct an informal interview, focusing on the participant’s developmental history.

Consider the following:

Family history and background

School environment and educational experience

Employment and volunteer work

Social relationships

Partnerships and parenthood

Significant life events

Significant life transitions

Memorable experiences

In addition to interview data, you may also obtain information from significant others, behavioral observations during the interview, and records (e.g. school reports, family albums, diaries, etc).

Part I: Document the questions you asked and the participant’s responses. This is your interview ‘transcript’ that will be turned in along with your reflective paper.

Part II: Write about 1,050 words reflecting on the interview. In your paper, include information on the following:

What were the most notable aspects of the interview? What topics did your interviewee respond strongly to and why?

What were the most surprising aspects of the interview? Did any of the interviewee’s responses surprise you? Explain.

What stood out as being most important in his/her life? Describe the interviewee’s most significant or meaningful life events.

What life transitions did your interviewee discuss? Did he/she disclose any specific strategies for coping with difficult life transitions? Describe the interviewee’s most challenging transitions.

Explain what you learned from this experience.

Use the literature in gerontology, wisdom and successful aging to supplement your paper and support your points.

Include at least three references from scholarly sources.

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

Brown, M. (2013). Developing social problems into research problems for graduate study [Online webcast]. Retrieved from Evaluating Use of Literature and Problem Statement

Researchers use scholarly literature for various purposes in their work, such as, but not limited to, establishing the need for and importance of their study or describing a theory. The problem statement is typically tied to the literature, and for this reason, these two components of research are presented together this week; this connection among research components will be a recurring theme throughout this course.

For this Discussion, you will evaluate the use of literature and problem statements in assigned journal articles in your discipline to understand what it means for a research study to be justified, grounded, and original. You will use the Use of Literature Checklist, the Problem Statement Checklist, and the Litmus Test as guides for your post.

With these thoughts in mind, refer to the Journal Articles document for your assigned articles for this Discussion. If your last name starts with A through L, use Article A. If your last name starts with M through Z, use Article B. Follow the prompt below for your program.

Problem Statement Checklist Use the following criteria to evaluate an author’s problem statement:

• Is a problem identified that leads to the need for this study?

• Is a rationale or justification for the problem clearly stated?

• Is the problem framed in a way that is consistent with the research approach?

• Does the statement convey how the study will address the problem?

• Are the citations to literature current (i.e., within the past 5 years with the exception of seminal works)?

Use of Literature Checklist

Use the following criteria to evaluate an author’s use of literature.

• Look for indications of the following ways the author used literature:

• Introduce a problem

• Introduce a theory

• Provide direction to the research questions and/or hypotheses

• Compare results with existing literature or predictions

• Did the author mention the problem addressed by the study?

• Is the purpose of the study stated?

• Are key variables in the study defined?

• Is information about the sample, population, or participants provided?

• Are the key results of the study summarized?

• Does the author provide a critique of the literature?

• Are sources cited to support points?

• Are the citations to recent literature (within the past 5 years with the exception of seminal works)?

• Does the literature justify the importance of the topic studied?

Litmus Test for a Doctoral-Level Research Problem

Background on these “litmus test” questions

· The distinguishing characteristic of doctoral-level research (as opposed to masters level) is that it must make an original contribution to the field. However, students may struggle to identify what will authentically contribute to their field or discipline.

· The most critical step in making such a contribution is to first identify a research problem with the 4 doctoral hallmarks below. Identifying a doctoral-level research problem is “necessary, but not sufficient,” to produce doctoral-level capstone.

REQUIRED DOCTORAL HALLMARKS OF THE RESEARCH PROBLEM

In Walden’s scholar-practitioner model, a research problem shows promise of contributing meaningfully to the field ONLY if the answer to ALL of the following questions is “yes.”

Yes

No

1. JUSTIFIED?

Is there evidence that this problem is significant to the professional field?

There must be relevant statistics (expressing an unjust inequality, financial impact, lost efficiency, etc.), documentable discrepancies (e.g., two models that are difficult to reconcile), and/or other scholarly facts that point to the significance and urgency of the problem. The problem must be an authentic “puzzle” that needs solving, not merely a topic that the researcher finds interesting.

A description of the chosen disorder and a comparison between normal brain function and the brain function of a person with the disorder

The final project is the creation of a case application paper that includes an in-depth analysis of a selected case study. Students will choose an individual such as a known historical figure, a celebrity, a fictional character, or an individual known personally to the student (ALL identifying information must be eliminated from the paper in the case of the last option). The selected individual must be a child or adolescent with a cognitive disorder or a learning disability, and enough information must be available to include the following in the analysis:

·A description of the chosen disorder and a comparison between normal brain function and the brain function of a person with the disorder

·An evaluation of the relationship between psychological and physiological aspects of the disorder and the resulting negative effects on daily functioning

·An assessment of the impact of recent technological advancements on the diagnosis and treatment of the disorder

·Recommendations for appropriate treatment options and coping mechanisms for the selected case and other people with the disorder

·Preventative measures that may be employed for others who may be at risk for the disorder

The case application paper should be a 10–12-page Word document. The final product represents an authentic demonstration of competencies highlighted by the course outcomes because the paper requires students to 1) analyze brain areas associated with a disorder and corresponding behavioral deficits, 2) review existing research and apply the literature to a topic in cognitive neuropsychology, and 3) assess diagnostic techniques, summarize effective treatments, and analyze possible outcomes of those treatments.

Research Design and Data Collection

Submit your response to the Submissions Area by the due date. Your response should be at least three pages in length.

Given the hypothesis high employee satisfaction is correlated with low employee absenteeism, address the following in your paper this week:

Identify the variables in this study. What are some extraneous variables that might impact your research? How would you control for extraneous variables?

Which research design would you use to study this hypothesis and why?

What data collection techniques would you use to study this hypothesis and why?

Assuming that you get a correlation of r = -.70, what does this tell you about the strength and direction of the correlation between satisfaction and absenteeism?

What are some potential problems you might encounter, and what strategies would you use to minimize these problems?

Use APA standards.

For this assignment and all Submissions assignments, you are required to cite, at a minimum, the online course and the textbook for the course. Additional sources are welcome.
